What is Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)?

ABA is the science of behavior and how behavior is affected by the environment. It focuses on environmental factors and observable behaviors in order to understand why a behavior is occurring (the function of the behavior), what reinforces, promotes, and maintains it. The goal of ABA is to increase behaviors that are helpful and decrease behaviors that are maladaptive or affect the individual in a negative way. Using strategies and techniques taken from learning theory, ABA strategies can be applied to all aspects of life, in fact, we use ABA on a regular basis without even knowing it!

Decades of research have validated the effectiveness of ABA intervention programs to promote positive behavior change for a variety of problems including reducing anxiety, increasing reading skills in children, improving safety related accidents in the workplace, increasing sports performance and more.

How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?

Because each individual and family has different issues and goals, it will be individualized for each client. In parent training, for example, you may want to address sleep issues and we will identify the barriers to your child going to sleep/staying asleep and develop a data informed plan to address the barriers. In a divorce consultant session, we may examine your child's difficulty with transitions between households (the why) and develop strategies to help your child thrive.
